Windows Server 2008 Desktop Experience feature and SharePoint

When running SharePoint on Windows Server 2008, make sure you activate the Desktop Experience server feature.

Without activating this feature you can't save documents directly from your Microsoft Office application into a SharePoint Document Library.

I have several Windows Server 2008 Standard editions running Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Standard with SP1. I did not install the Desktop Experience feature but I can save documents directly from my Microsoft Office Word 2003. I did not do any further testing but you should not have to install the Desktop Experience feature on Windows Server 2008 to work with SharePoint.

By adding the Desktop Experience feature to my 2008 server I was able to save directly to my SharePoint Document Library.

Thanks for the help.

My workplace has two SharePoint 2010 Web servers running Win Srv '08 R2; I just finished a successful task in which I composed a Word document in IE 8 and saved it directly to a document library folder. Both Web servers DO NOT have the Desktop Experience feature installed.

By the way, I interacted with the document library on a Windows 7 Enterprise workstation.

I just finished applying the process I posted earlier today to an Excel document and was successful.  Again, both Web servers DO NOT have the Desktop Experience feature installed.
