I have several Windows Server 2008 Standard editions running Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Standard with SP1. I did not install the Desktop Experience feature but I can save documents directly from my Microsoft Office Word 2003. I did not do any further testing but you should not have to install the Desktop Experience feature on Windows Server 2008 to work with SharePoint.

Hi Faris,

Just make sure you install each language pack individual, so the language pack for WSS, MOSS, WSS SP1 and finally MOSS SP1. After you installed each language pack, run the Configuration Wizard once.

Hope this helps.

After searching for 3 days, this was the best most current information on how to integrate the lastest Acrobat v9 iFilter into SharePoint 2007. I kept finding old information on v5/v6 and SharePoint 2003, with everything I found stating that since v7 the iFilter is included in the Reader download, there was no information on how to implement. And although I've only completed the steps about an hour ago and cannot confirm that the PDF content is properly indexed, I can say that there are no obvious errors in the suggested steps contained in this post.

Hi, I couldn't get it working, then I found MS KB 927675 for Adobe IFilter 6 and got it to work.  It is a bit simpler to configure. It does not show how to do the icon as described above though.

I only followed these 3 steps and pdf crawling is successful:

• Downloaded Adobe Reader 9.0

• Go to Search Settings -> File Types – Add pdf

(Note: Pdf image shows up automatically with the pdf extension.)

• Added the PDF file type to the Extensions List:

o Start regedit

o Open the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0\Search\Applications\{GUID}\Gather\Search\Extensions\ExtensionList

o Added PDF to the list as a new String Value. Used a new high value e.g. used "38" as the key with the value "pdf".

thanks harold for sharing this article,

I like to add some comments to the above article, in which you can either choose to install your own desired language pack OR you can download the entire .CDI image language pack file from Mirosoft website. After the installation of this image file is completed, you just have to run the "Sharepoint Configuration Wizard" once.

To select a particular language pack, you just have to go to the "Site Collection" and you can create a new language for your WSS site. If you have an existing WSS site in English, you have no choice but to delete the Site Collection and then, recreate it with your desired language.

I am hosting my French WSS site with asphostcentral.com (http://www.asphostcentral.com) and they are offering me free French language pack and free 40 Sharepoint templates. I am just paying $4.99/month for this service and I am very delighted and grateful with their service so far.

If you have any problems with your Sharepoint site, a forum in asp.net would be another good resources that you can refer to. Hope this helps and all the best!

# re: Using virtual machines on Windows 7 RC with Windows Virtual PC beta

Monday, May 04, 2009 2:04 AM by Estevan

This is application virtualisation. This creates a confusing scenario where hardware that is incompatible with Vista may be passed through to the virtual XP. The virtual XP's kernel has compatible drivers and the device works. However, this means that this device can only work in XP virtual application, not in Windows 7 native applications. For example, I have a webcam for which there are no Vista (or 7) compatible drivers. I would still be able to use this in Windows 7, but only in Skype running in the virtual machine, not the version of Skype running on the Win7 kernel. This is a bit of a confusing situation for non-technical people.

I can confirm that the difference in GUIDs between the Adobe PDF filter earlier versions and the one used by version 9 (E8978DA6-047F-4E3D-9C78-CDBE46041603) is indeed the cause of my particular manifestation of this problem.  I write this comment to hopefully save some of you other sysadmins some pain by pointing out that a full server bounce is required before the fix takes effect... just cycling the services involved doesn't do the trick.

# re: Using virtual machines on Windows 7 RC with Windows Virtual PC beta

Saturday, May 23, 2009 10:26 AM by Harold van de Kamp

Hello Dave,

Create a new Windows Virtual PC virtual machine. Enter a name and location to store the virtual machine file and specify the amount of RAM. In the "Add a virtual disk" wizard page choose "Use an existing virtual hard disk" by locating your old .vhd virtual hard disk file. Finish the wizard and start your virtual machine.

If i doesn't start, make sure you have rights to access the old .vhd file. After a new install of your operating system the security rights can be broken. Locate your .vhd file, right click it, choose properties and open the security tab. Make sure your Windows 7 user account is added to the list of users who can access that .vhd file.

Good luck.

Harold van de Kamp

Hello Radhesh,

To make Windows XP applications visible inside your Windows 7 start menu, first make sure you have installed the Virtual PC Integration Components inside your guest PC.

The only thing left is to create shortcuts inside your guest PC to each program you want to be visible. Place those shortcuts inside the All Users\Start Menu folder.

Hope this helps.

From my experience with SharePoint and Outlook, everything is done directly to Outlook.  For the mobile device to receive that information, it would have to come from the Exchange environment which would mean that data would need to be in the users mailbox found on Exchange.  Again, from what I have found all that information is stored at the client level.

Wow how a little interface change can mean such a big thing!

Am I the only one who installed Virtual PC Beta then spent forever trying to find where it was installed, or more specifically how to access the VPC UI?

Clicking on the "Virtual Machines" folder was 'completely' unhelpful as it simply opened the user profile folder containing the VM's! Of course it took a reinstall before I found that the UI was actually now intergrated into explorer!

Wow, I love progress.

So should I rename the existing Multi-String or create a new one, and either way, what am I supposed to call it?

Bitten by yet another bug. Platform: Microsoft Virtual PC2007, Guest OS: Vista Ultimate SP2 integrated, basic install, no additional software added and experiences problem with the windows installer. I believe the problem is with the Windows installer v4.5 and PC2007 although i have seen it reported that people are experiencing this without VPC. I also googled to see if its possible to uninstall or revert back to a previous Windows installer but if it is possible it doesn't seem easy. I'm aware i can suppress the interaction to install the program but i find this pretty bad that MS can't even validate that their installer works straight out of the box on thier main virtualization program.

After I installed the Beta and virtual XP on 64bitWin7RC I had a new folder on the start menu with Virtual Windows XP and VirtualPC. Virtual PC looked diferent but not too confusing. I was able to start another copy of Win7 which I had made under VPC2007 running on Vista host and integration worked. Win7RC 64bit had some driver problems at 1st with HPprinter but I went to HP site and somehow it found the 64bit Vista driver I think. Still haven't got the wireless adapter working but am hardwired on this PC so no real need for it. I just wish the screen on VirtualMachines would resize like virtualXP or VirtualBox machines without the scroll bars. Also hope they'll have integration for linux distros soon.

I followed these instructions (thanks!) and most of my pdfs are now searchable.

Unfortunately even though it says it has crawled all of them some pdfs do not appear in the search results.

All I can gather so far is that in the non-searchable ones Properties - PDF - PDF version = 1.3

While the searchable ones have PDF version = 1.4

Anyhing I can do about this?

For more additional information on the VMCX (Virtual Machine Configuraiton file) see this thread:

social.technet.microsoft.com/.../b89f6fad-50fb-4bfb-a12a-5b6a2bc5f8ba

So to answer your specific question, I did try renaming VMC to VMCX and that does not work.

It is even easier (at least with Windows 7 RTM):

I copied it (VMC) from the USB drive into the C:\Users\xxx\Virtual Machines folder then simply double-clicked (default Open With - Windows Virtual PC), it automatically created a new VMCX and spun up.

Awesome. I was actually searching for a VMC to VMCX converter. No need.

Sunday, March 21, 2010 9:31 PM by Vishal

Dear All

Here is a two step solution to installing software when you continue to get this error.

Step 1 : Extract the contents of the MSI using

msiexec /a PathToMSIFile /qb TARGETDIR=DirectoryToExtractTo

Please ensure you replace the "DirectoryToExtractTo" with a full path e.g. c:\abc\def\ghi

The folder does not need to pre-exist.

Step 2: Browse to the folder and then doubleclick the msi from there.

Hope this helps for you.

Vishal

I am still not able to go this working.  I am using Moss 2007 32bit, so I am using the Adobe Ifilter 6.0 because 9.0 is only for 64bit.  I followed all of the instructions that you had as well as Microsoft's KB article support.microsoft.com/.../927675

In the Microsoft KB Article i think the GUID they give is incorrect.  When I scanned the registry for acrordif.dll the GUID they give was not there but one very close.

{8215BA54-B69F-4275-AE11-31CB6359EB09} instead of the listed {8315BA54-B69F-4275-AE11-31CB6359EB09}

Hi,

This has worked for me!

Regards

Vishal

***********************************************************

Once that was done I used this command

msiexec /i filename.msi

Where the filename.msi is the file used in first extraction.

I had imaged a pc and started installing some new apps when getting the “please wait while the installer finishes determining your disk space requirements”,window.  I noticed it happend when installing all applications and had to cacel the setup on each one.

The image had SP3 on it but I re-installed it it and that seemed to fix the problem.  Every app I installed after that finished fine.

WOW, THANK YOU SO MUCH - the msiexex /i method was WONDERFUL, instead of looking at my client's screen do nothing for 1/2 a day (XP with only 512meg RAM so figured it could actually be a speed thing), install took just seconds to complete. TRICK - my installer was in a folder so I created a shortcut to it then copy/pasted the location/program-name on the cmd line to save typing, ie:

C:\downloads\OnlineServicesSignIn-en.msi - was from copy/paste from shortcut, maybe that tidbit will help someone prevent a typo.

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This fixed it form me and I did not have access to the msi file:

cleared out %tmp% and ran:

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msi.dll

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msisip.dll

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msihnd.dll

Other suggestion found, but not needed:

RMDIR /S /Q %TEMP%

MD %TEMP%

del /q %systemdrive%\temp\*.*

del /q %systemdrive%\%windir%\temp\*.*

The following time I read a weblog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one. All I hear is a bunch of whining about one thing that you could possibly fix in case you werent too busy searching for attention.

solved:

same problem, in my case (MS Project Prof. 2003, XP-SP3) it turned out that the installation path contains spaces " " (i.e. x:\install\MSO PP 2003).

renaming the installation path to x:\install\MSO-PP-2003 was the solution.

I’ve to say, I dont know if its the clashing colors or the dangerous grammar, however this weblog is hideous! I mean, I dont need to sound like a know-it-all or something, but might you could have possibly put a little bit more effort into this subject. Its really attention-grabbing, however you dont signify it nicely in any respect, man. Anyway, in my language, there usually are not much good supply like this.
