TechNet Search provider for IE 7

This morning, when I searched for information about a .Net object in the MSDN library, I noticed the message "Got IE7? - get our search" on the right-hand side of the window. Clicking that link will open up the following window:

When you click "Add Provider", a new entry is added to the search provider menu. And presto, you now have a search provider that limits your search to the MSDN web site.

Adding search providers is one of the new cool options in IE7. I installed IE7 at the beginning of this week and I immediately added Google.com/Microsoft as a custom search provider. I use Google.com/Microsoft a lot, because it limits my search results to stuff that is related to Microsoft. Adding this custom search provider can be done in 7 easy steps:

  1. Click on the arrow down button next to the search button.
  2. From the menu, select Find more providers
  3. In the web page that appears, you should see a yellowish section with two text boxes.
  4. In the first text box, type the following URL: http://www.Google.com/Microsoft?hl=en&lr=&q=TEST&btnG=Search
  5. In the second text box, type a name for the search provider. For example: Google Microsoft.
  6. Click on the Install button.
  7. The window to confirm that you want to add "Google Microsoft" as a search provider opens. Click on the "Add Provider" button and the search provider is installed.
