Warning: MediaFire Deletes files without notice

Posted Tue, Sep 15 2009 10:44 PM by Mischa Kroon

A couple of days ago my girlfriend called me that the files she stored at MediaFire where gone. A little after that I tried to login to MediaFire to have a look at how my files where doing.

I was quite surprised to see my own files deleted as well.

After that I came across a FAQ entry on the website

“There is currently no time limit on how long uploaded files will be stored as long as you access your account (i.e. login to your account) at least once every 60 days OR at least one of your files is accessed (i.e. downloaded) every 30 days. If your account is not accessed within the time limit, then the files in your account will be cleared. MediaPro subscribers’ uploaded files will remain forever as long as the account is active.
If you are a Mediafire free user and your files were deleted due to inactivity, they are deleted from all servers and cannot be retrieved.

This means that files stored on MediaFire will be deleted without any kind of notification if you don’t log in every 2 months. This is something which is quite scary to me.

So be careful when using MediaFire and don’t store any files on there which you haven’t stored anywhere else, or be sure to use your account enough to not get your files deleted.

Yeah,

This happened to me too.

They don't make this very clear do they.

No such thing as a free lunch i suppose.

Kind regards,

Joe

This happened to me in the worst time possible. While in Brazil I had to download a recent DJ mix I had stored on MediaFire to be distributed to people and other contacts. Went to download and the file wasn't there, a statement kept coming up saying my file was deleted. To my knowledge, I never did delete it.

So BEWARE if you store anything on MediaFire.

Problem is not only with Mediafire but most file hosting websites including the popular ones like rapidshare. They tend to delete files without notice for a number of different reasons if you are a free user.

Most of these websites have terms of conditions like you need to login to your account within a certain period of time or your files must be downloaded a set number of times within a set period of time. Of course if anybody reports your files, it's deleted too. There are too many hassles and no safe way to share or backup stuffs for free.

I am yet to find a website that allows us to upload unlimited number of files without any restrictions. Adrive is the best I have found till date with 50GB of free storage and files are never deleted. But mediafire allows unlimited storage. There is always a trade-off somewhere which once again proves that nothing good in life is ever totally free.

MediaFire.com act much strange than what it says. In my case, after clicking the file for sharing, the download link for a wrong file appeared for several times. Then all the files I just uploaded were gone from the folder. It happened after the files uploaded disappeared from the folder twice. Here is the video I took from my digital camera of what happened. MediaFire.com is probably under the surveillance by the cyber terrorists and not reliable at all.

well say if i access mediafire every 2 months then they wont delete my files right????

then it is not much of a hassle will just access it. It is a decent enough trade off between free access to storage :)

I just logged into Media Fire for the first time in several months, and all my files are gone. I had uploaded photos that I wanted to be saved there because I didn't have a computer of my own. They're now completely all gone. This is total and utter bullshit.
